Weddings & formal

Bridal gowns get more than a hem: beaded lace appliqués removed and hand-sewn back, plus a custom bustle. The shop suggests starting bridal work 6–12 weeks before the wedding.

Leather & shearling

Customers have brought in leather jackets for shorter sleeves, a motorcycle vest for a shoulder alteration, a side zipper repair, and a shearling coat to patch and restitch.

Complimentary estimates

Stop by and the shop will look at the whole garment, not just the hem, and tell you what’s worth altering. Sometimes that means doing less.

Alteration prices aren’t published. Stop by for an estimate or call (925) 969-0092.

  • Came in 1 week before a wedding in Cabo - they had me looking sharp before I took the mic to emcee for my best friends! Won't be going anywhere else for tailoring.

  • I’ve driven past this place so many times and always assumed it was men’s suit tailoring. However, they also do lots of tailoring on ladies clothing and dresses. Brought in two pairs of ladies slacks and they did a beautiful job! I’ll be back for all my future tailoring needs. Family owned and operated, great communication, fair pricing, very good quality work.

  • Super nice owners, they walked me through everything and made suggestions for improvements even when they didnt stand to make money off it (strongly suggested I size up where I had bought the original jacket, and he was right). Were nice about a rush job.

  • Señor Escobar is the best in town. On my first visit, he greeted me warmly and chatted with me for a bit. After doing some quick measurements, he showed me 4-5 excellent options. I am picky with clothing fit so I narrowed it down to 1 option but still not perfect. He was patient with me and took time to think about how to tailor the jacket and pants. After a few alterations, the whole set fit beautifully. Señor even gave me a nice fabric cover free of charge.

Worth every $ spent. Exceptional quality formalwear. Nicest people in the business. Would highly recommend to family and friends. You won't regret visiting Escobar Tailors. Truly a gem in the East Bay.

Se habla español. Los sastres tienen un montón de experiencia. Es el mejor lugar para alteraciones de ropa formal. ¡No te arrepentirás!

  • I brought a leather jacket in to have the sleeves shortened. She did such a good job, I brought in another leather jacket. Also done perfectly.

    Really nice, very professional.

  • This is a suit trailer that advised he had the equipment to tailor a thick leather motorcycle vest. Only listed businesses were saddleries to perform a shoulder alterations. Decided to give Escobar a try, leather is a one try alteration. The shoulders fit very well, he advised to take less material than I wanted and he was right. Amazingly it was done with one fitting and fits perfectly. A touch tight, which will stretch in cause leather forms to its wearer. Skilled craftsmanship, knew he could take a risk he wasn't necessarily used to performing on a daily basis. Wasn't cheap but this isn't a cheap suit, it is forever.

  • My jaw is still on the floor.... I attempted to sew in a side zipper in my new motorcycle jacket with my ancient sewing experience and while it worked, It's pretty darn ugly and sketchy. So I looked up tailors in the area and and found Escobar's in Pleasant Hill. I was welcomed by the warm and friendly family staff. They were very conscientious about my jacket and wanted to make sure that there would be no damage to it from their work while attempting to fix my horrible work. Prices were more than fair for this level of expertise, the zipper looks so good, you can't tell the difference between their zipper and the manufacturers zippers, absolutely amazing. This is my new go to place for any tailoring or alterations from now on!!! Once again, Gacias to you guys!!!

The tailor

Efrain Escobar. Sixty years of craft.

Born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Efrain learned the trade at age eight from his father, Felipe. He has practiced it in Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico and California. Back in Bolivia, his own shop in La Paz once took second place in a nationwide fashion competition.

He brought his family to the Bay Area in 1989. Here he has worked at Tom James Co. of San Francisco, Gene Hiller Menswear of Sausalito and Prada of San Francisco, and he was head tailor at Men’s Wearhouse of Pleasant Hill.

Today he owns and runs Escobar Tailors in downtown Pleasant Hill. He sells suits and accessories and alters men’s and women’s clothing. The trade runs in the family: his son Gabriel, whom he began teaching at eight, runs his own tailor shop in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood.

“I learned this craft from my father, and now I have the privilege of standing in my own shop, measuring my grandson and passing that tradition on to another generation.”
